Can you use your nickname in your signature?

If you use a shortened version of your first name, can you sign your signature with your nickname on official documents? Is that legally okay to do? Or does it have to be your full name? For example, actress Evangeline Lilly has a long first name, and she often goes by Evie. Could she sign that on a legal document? Like filling out bank forms, etc?
